TOP FIVE THINGS ABOUT DERMAL FILLERS

TOP FIVE THINGS ABOUT DERMAL FILLERS

  • Correct volume loss in the skin that occurs in aging, like around the mouth or eyes.
  • Enhance volume in areas like the lips and cheeks.
  • Must be prescribed by a medical doctor as they are Schedule 4 medications.
  • Temporary fillers have far fewer complications than permanent fillers.
  • A safe, effective and non-surgical procedure for facial rejuvenation.

What are Dermal Fillers?

They are a purified sugar (acid) which can be injected into the dermal layer of the skin to soften or remove facial lines, wrinkles, scars, and creases or depressions that start to appear in our skin due to the breakdown of the natural supporting framework of the skin .

Where is it commonly used?

For smoothing smile lines, smoker’s lines, frown lines and crow’s feet, dermal fillers are particularly popular, but they can also be used for enhancement of the lips or smoothing out scars or textural depressions. Replacing lost volume in the cheek and tear trough areas is becoming increasingly popular.

What product is used?

The TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) restricts the promotion of the product name for dermal fillers in Australia, but there are several different fillers now available for use. Here at the Cosmetic and Laser Medical Centre, our doctors are experts in the use of temporary fillers such as collagen and acid. These are safe and well tolerated in the body. These natural products will be naturally broken down by the body and follow up treatments will be required once or twice a year after the initial procedure.

Who does the treatment?

The treatment should only be provided with a written prescription from a medical practitioner, as it is a Schedule 4 medication (Drugs Poisons and Controlled Substances Regulations 2006 SR No. 57/2006 Part 2 Division 6 – Administration).

All dermal fillers performed at the Cosmetic and Laser Medical Centre are performed by our fully registered medical practitioners or our registered specialist cosmetic nurses.

How is the treatment performed?

Treatment usually starts with a topical cream or local anaesthetic for numbing the treatment area, then the injection of the dermal filler. Side effects of redness, swelling and bruising can occur, but these typically will subside quickly and can be covered with makeup if necessary.

Are there any side effects?

At the Cosmetic and Laser Medical Centre, we use temporary dermal fillers that are naturally present in the skin, not derived from animals, so you do not need to do any allergy testing before treatment. The dermal fillers we use have been clinically studied and used for years, with results showing exceptional toleration. Minimal discomfort or side effects such as redness, firmness, swelling, lumps or bumps, and bruising or discolouration can occur but if they do generally lasts only 3 days or less. Normally, you can resume usual activities immediately after treatment.

Can dermal fillers be combined with other treatments?

FillersCosmetic products and procedures are often used in conjunction with dermal fillers as a way to achieve the best results. Wrinkle injections for muscle relaxation can be combined with dermal fillers to improve results– this is particularly effective in reducing frown lines, because the filler tends to last longer in relaxed muscles.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Generally, the temporary fillers that we use will last our patients between 6-12 months, but this depends on the area treated – breakdown will occur quicker in areas that see a lot of muscular activity, like around the mouth, but less active areas like the cheeks will last longer. Semi-permanent and permanent fillers will last longer than the temporary fillers, but they are more expensive and have been associated with more side effects.

What is the cost?

This depends on which temporary filler you choose and how many of the prefilled single-use syringes your treatment requires. Some patients need only one, while others require several, and the cost of one syringe starts at $550 plus GST. There is no Medicare rebate for this. Packages such as the Natural Lift Package and Natural Lip Package are available.
